Structural Optimization Principles

1. Dimensional Weight (DIM)

Carriers charge by size, not just weight. A 2-inch reduction in a carton's height can slice 15% off parcel shipping costs instantly.

2. Void Fill Ratio

Mullen Test

A test measuring the bursting strength of paperboard, indicating its ability to withstand puncture.

Die-Cut

A process using a steel-rule die to cut, score, and crease flat material into complex custom shapes (e.g., mailer boxes).

PCR

Post-Consumer Recycled content. Material that has served its intended use and been recovered from the waste stream.

Basis Weight

The weight of a given area of paperboard. In the US, expressed as pounds per 1,000 square feet (MSF).

What is the difference between ECT and Burst Strength?

Burst (Mullen) Test: Measures the force required to puncture the face of corrugated board. It relates directly to the material's ability to withstand rough handling and internal/external pressures. Measured in pounds per square inch (psi).

Edge Crush Test (ECT): Measures the edgewise compressive strength of the board. It is a direct indicator of stacking strength (Box Compression Test) rather than puncture resistance. Measured in pounds per lineal inch (lb/in).

While historically Burst was the standard, ECT is now preferred for supply chains where stacking (palletization) is the primary concern.

What constitutes 'Food Contact Material' (FCM)?

Under FDA (US) and EFSA (EU) regulations, Food Contact Materials include any material or article intended to come into contact with food, already in contact with food, or which can reasonably be expected to transfer constituents to food under normal use.

This includes packaging, processing machinery, containers, and even inks/adhesives on the non-contact side if migration through the substrate is possible (functional barrier requirement).

How does EPR affect packaging choices?

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) shifts the financial and physical responsibility of packaging end-of-life (recycling/disposal) from municipalities back to the producers (brands/importers).

Eco-modulated EPR fees mean you pay more for hard-to-recycle materials (like multi-layer flexible films, PVC, or carbon black plastics) and less for widely recyclable mono-materials (like clear PET or corrugated cardboard). Designing for recyclability is now a direct financial imperative, not just a marketing claim.
